Gender Imbalance
- According to a US study (Author Unknown), the sex ratio in Pakistan is one of the most unequal in the world. The proportion of men and women in Pakistan is 111 men per 100 women whereas the world average is 104 women for every 100 men.
- Gender imbalance is more severe in the rural parts of Pakistan because the people there have a more traditional mindset. To them girls are a burden and boys are preferred.
- Gender imbalance in Pakistan is largely caused by female infanticide. The video below shows how killing of infants is on the rise in Pakistan. The babies may be hanged or burnt. Their corpses are often dumped in Karachi's sprawling garbage dumps, where they're sometimes mutilated by street animals. Statistics show that roughly 9 out of 10 infants killed are baby girls. This is due to the fact that families consider daughters too costly to keep as women frequently are not allowed to work in Pakistan. The killing of newborns gets little attention in Pakistan, and are rarely investigated as the police force is poorly trained and lacks resources.
